BUIB Reaches Out To Diabetes Patients

The 2020 Global Week for action on None Communicable Diseases ( NCDs) was observed recently from September 7th to  11th 2020 in rural areas of the Limbe Health District in the South West Region of Cameroon. Activities aimed at empowering nurses to care for diabetes patients in rural areas of the Limbe health district as well as transporting patients from these rural areas to urban diabetes centres where they can receive specialist care.

Funded by World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) and Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB), the Health Research Foundation (HRF) Buea, in collaboration with Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB) have successfully trained 52 nurses to manage patients living with diabetes.

It is worth noting that, according to the 2019 International Diabetes Federation (IDF) atlas, the rural prevalence of diabetes In Cameroon has been estimated to be between   7% – 10.5% in French speaking regions and 3.8 – 4.9 in the south west English speaking region. In 2020, Leke and colleagues estimated that almost 68% of persons living with diabetes in the rural South West Region are unaware of their status.

These findings support reasons for the fight against diabetes especially in rural areas of Cameroon. Holding under the caption “We Keep Our Eyes Fixed on Diabetes- the Silent Killer in Rural Cameroon” this initiative will go a long way to curb the number of deaths in Cameroon as a result of diabetes.

August Visit of the Vice Chancellor of UB to BUIB

“I have seen how the vision of an individual can transform the educational landscape. BUIB is a true reflection of President Biya’s Vision for Private Higher Institutions”. These words were echoed by Prof. Ngomo Horace Manga, Vice Chancellor of the University of Buea  (UB) during an official visit to Biaka University Institute of Buea  (BUIB) on September 2nd 2020.

Appearing at BUIB for the first time since his installation as Vice-Chancellor of the mentor university- UB, Prof. Ngomo Horace was amazed as he visited the various structures put in place by BUIB to ensure the effective teaching of students. While visiting the school library, simulation Centre, laboratory, lecture halls and the St Veronica Polyclinic amongst others, the August Guest endorsed that BUIB indeed has the audacity to be different.

The Chair and Vice Chancellor of BUIB in the person of Dr. Mrs Francisca Hongla Biaka while welcoming the guest and his entourage, expressed satisfaction in the mentor/mentee relationship between UB and BUIB that has been in existence since 2007. She reiterated the willingness of BUIB to continue learning from the mother institution for better implementation of the policies guiding Higher Education in Cameroon.

Nevertheless, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of academic affairs Prof. Fonkeng Epah George while applauding the working relationship between UB and BUIB this far, presented some challenges faced by BUIB including but not limited to the payment of the examination vetting fee at the beginning of the academic year which is often not a true reflection of the total number of students who actually remain with BUIB till the end of the school year.

Responding to this and other issues raised during the visit, Prof. Ngomo Horace Manga promised to visit these concerns and equally reminded the management of BUIB that it is their duty as a mentor institution to assist BUIB in projects that will better the quality of training handed to students. He further pledged the availability of UB at all times to ensure that BUIB achieves its goals and equally called on the BUIB team to remain focus and continue the great works.
