On this 21st day of May 2020, Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB) joins in the celebration of Ascension Day – a holiday in Cameroon to commemorate Jesus Christ’s ascension to heaven as recorded in the Bible. This celebration which always falls on a Thursday is observed on the fortieth day of Easter – 39 days after Easter Sunday.
Operating as a university that respects religious values and which is non-discriminatory, BUIB compliments the tradition of observing this day accordingly. The Ascension is meaningful to Christians as it is believed that it signifies the end of Christ’s work on Earth and allowed him to prepare a place for followers in heaven
It is worth noting that according to history, this holiday has been observed at least since A.D. 385 in Western Christianity, and some say since A.D. 68. There are often church processions with torches and banners on Ascension Day, and some bring produce to mass to be blessed by priests.
Celebrated at a time when social distancing, wearing protective masks, and the washing and sanitizing of hands have become the order of the day due to the novel coronavirus, the entire BUIB family wishes everyone a safe celebration.
