Honoring Legacy: BUIB’s Gracious Gesture to the Oldest Athlete at the 29th Mount Cameroon Race of Hope

Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB) eagerly anticipated the opening day of the 29th edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, a prestigious event that brought together athletes from across the nation. The Molyko Omnisport Stadium buzzed with excitement as participants, spectators, and dignitaries gathered for the grand occasion.

Presiding over the event was the esteemed Minister of Sports and Physical Education; Chief Professor Narcisse M. Kombi whose presence added an air of officialdom to the proceedings. The Minister’s passionate opening remarks set the tone for the day, emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship and unity in such competitions.

The welcome address was gracefully delivered by the Mayor of Buea, whose municipality had always been the proud host of this iconic race. Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to host the event once again, the Mayor highlighted the significance of the race in promoting health, unity, and the spirit of competition within the community.

The President of the National Bureau of the Athletic Federation took the stage, extending heartfelt thanks to the organizing members, partners, and sponsors who made the event possible. With conviction in his voice, he declared that the 29th edition would be the best in the history of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope. His words resonated through the stadium, instilling a sense of anticipation and excitement among the crowd.

In a touching moment, the President recognized the oldest athlete on the course, a testament to the enduring spirit of the race. The elderly participant, having defied the passage of time, stood as a symbol of determination and resilience. As the crowd applauded, the President invited the Vice Chancellor of BUIB to join him on the stage.

The Vice Chancellor; Dr. Mrs Francisca Hongla Biaka representing the St. Veronica medical centre (SVMC) especially the Biaka University Institute of Buea, stepped forward with pride. In a gracious gesture, she reminded the the crowd at the national event of SVMC’s newest born; Dr. BIAKA MEMORIAL FOUNDATION (DBMF) and officially gifted and decorated the oldest athlete, expressing admiration for the athlete’s commitment to the sporting discipline and the inspiration provided to the younger generation. She ended up by publicly announcing to the public that Mr. Jackai George will hence be the responsibility of the centre and officially benefit from the health care arm of the foundation. The crowd erupted in cheers, creating an infectious energy that reverberated throughout Buea.

The atmosphere in the stadium was electric as the opening ceremony reached its climax with many traditional displays. Athletes from various institutions, regions and Nations eagerly awaited the next day’s signal to begin the challenging ascent up Mount Cameroon. The mountain, standing tall and majestic in the backdrop, seemed to beckon the runners to embark on a journey of endurance and achievement.

As the Minister of Sports and Physical Education will officially signal the start of the race on the 24th of February 2024, the participants will surg forward, fueled by a blend of excitement and determination.

Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB) Maiden Research Committee Meeting: A Glimpse into Collaboration and Innovation

In a significant stride towards fostering academic research and innovation, the Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB) held its maiden Research Committee Meeting on the 2nd of February 2024 at the SVMC conference room. Chaired by the Vice Chancellor of BUIB, the event brought together key stakeholders; Professors, directors of BUIB’s five schools and other research brains to set the tone for a robust research agenda.

The meeting commenced with a word of prayer then a warm welcome address by the Vice Chancellor; Dr. Mrs. Francisca Hongla Biaka who skillfully juggled the roles of both host and Chairperson. In her opening remarks, she emphasized the pivotal role of research in advancing the institution’s academic standing and reaffirmed BUIB’s commitment to becoming a hub for groundbreaking research.

Following the welcome address, the director of BUIB’s research center; Dr. Ako Simon took the floor to present the esteemed members of the Research Committee. Their diverse expertise and backgrounds underscored the interdisciplinary approach the committee aimed to embrace. This presentation not only introduced the key players but also highlighted the wealth of knowledge and experience assembled for this crucial endeavor.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) incharge of Academics played a pivotal role by outlining the roles and functions of the BUIB Research Committee. This roadmap emphasized the committee’s responsibility to spearhead innovative research initiatives, mentor budding researchers, and establish collaborative partnerships with external institutions. The DVC’s clear elucidation laid a solid foundation for the committee’s objectives, guiding members on the path to impactful contributions.

The heart of the meeting was the vibrant exchange of ideas as committee members enthusiastically contributed proposals and suggestions on what needs to be done and how the committee should operate. This interactive session witnessed a diverse array of perspectives, ranging from streamlining research funding mechanisms to implementing cutting-edge technologies in research proposals, data collection and analysis. The committee members’ collective wisdom reflected a shared commitment to elevating BUIB’s research profile.

To ensure comprehensive coverage and focused efforts, members were then partitioned to work on the five submitted proposals representing the distinctive schools of thought within BUIB. This strategic allocation aimed to harness the specialized expertise of each subgroup, fostering a collaborative environment where ideas could be refined and synergies explored.

 

The groups are expected to dive into the intricacies of their assigned proposals and exchange insights while cross-pollinating with the collaborative spirit that the Research Committee hopes to instill in the challenging yet exciting journey of shaping the future research landscape at BUIB.

Biaka University Institute of Buea today played host to a significant seminar under the theme “Global Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases.” The event, which drew participants from the esteemed School of Health Sciences, aimed to deepen understanding and foster discussions on the challenges posed by infectious diseases on a global scale.

The seminar commenced with a warm welcome from the Vice-Chancellor; Dr. Mrs. Francisca Biaka who set the tone for an intellectually stimulating session. The participants, comprised of both faculty and students from the School of Health Sciences, gathered with an eagerness to delve into the intricate world of infectious diseases and their impact on global health.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academics; Professor Fonkeng Epah George took the stage to introduce the distinguished guest speaker for the day, Professor Judith Ndongo Torimiro. With a profile that spoke volumes of her expertise in the field of Research and Health and Environmental sciences, Professor Ndongo brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the seminar. Commencement Fever; First Semester Trials at Biaka University Institute of Buea

The morning sun bathed Biaka University Institute of Buea in a warm glow as anticipation filled the air. Today marked the commencement of the first semester exams, an event that stirred a mix of nervousness and excitement among the students. However, the tension was particularly palpable for those enrolled in the direct B.Sc and top-up programs of the School of Health Sciences.

As the clock struck 8:00 AM, students gathered in front of the examination halls, clutching their notes and textbooks, exchanging last-minute revision tips. The atmosphere was charged with a sense of purpose and determination, knowing that success in these exams would set the tone for their academic journey.

Inside the examination halls, the air buzzed with focused energy. The meticulous arrangement of desks and the stern gazes of invigilators heightened the seriousness of the occasion. Students flipped through question papers, their pencils poised for the challenge ahead. The questions which are a gateway to the exploration of their knowledge, awaited them.

In the School of Health Sciences, the stakes were even higher. The direct B.Sc and top-up programs demanded a deep understanding of complex medical concepts and practical applications.
