The Dr. Biaka Memorial Foundation (DBMF) joined the global community today February 4th 2026 at the Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB) campus to commemorate World Cancer Day 2026, under the inspiring global theme “United by Unique.” The event brought together health professionals, administrators, students, volunteers, and community members in a unified call to raise awareness, promote prevention, and strengthen collective responsibility in the fight against cancer.

Activities for the day began as early as 9:00 a.m., where participants arrived for registration, orientation, and the distribution of World Cancer Day T-shirts, coordinated by DBMF volunteers. This was followed by a symbolic cancer awareness walk from Biaka Junction to the BUIB campus, led by the DBMF team. The walk served as a powerful visual statement of solidarity with cancer patients and survivors, while also drawing public attention to the importance of early detection and community engagement.



The official opening ceremony was marked by an opening prayer, the singing of the national anthem, and a warm & inspiring welcome address delivered by the BUIB’s Vice Chancellor and Board Chair of the Biaka Group, Dr. Francisca Hongla Biaka. In her address, she underscored the importance of collective action in the fight against cancer, emphasizing the need for awareness, early detection, and compassion-driven care. She reaffirmed the Biaka Group’s unwavering commitment to health promotion, community education, and support for cancer prevention initiatives, while calling on institutions, families, and individuals to play active roles in safeguarding public health.



The opening act was a special guest intervention led by Cameroonian afro-pop music star Mary Asaba who doubles as founder of the ASABA HEALTH FOUNDATION, she combined first aid training with a live performance, using her influence to promote life-saving skills and community preparedness. Her session was complemented by a free CPR training organized by Biaka Hospital in collaboration with DBMF, equipping participants with critical emergency response skills that can save lives in real-life situations.



The event featured a series of insightful expert presentations. Dr. O. J. Nathaniel Eben, addressed the topic “Understanding Cancer and Breaking the Myths Around Cancer.” His presentation helped demystify common misconceptions surrounding cancer, stressing that early diagnosis and accurate information can significantly improve outcomes. He was followed by Dr. Besingi Essono, who spoke on “Cancer Prevention and Early Detection,” underscoring the importance of lifestyle choices, routine screenings, and timely medical intervention. The third speaker, Dr. Mbonge Patience, delivered a compelling presentation on “Healthy Lifestyle and Cancer Risk Reduction,” encouraging the adoption of healthier diets, physical activity, and stress management as preventive measures against cancer. Ruth Amin delivered the fourth keynote on “Access to Inclusive Cancer Care – Community Action and Collective Responsibility.” Her presentation emphasized the need for equitable healthcare access, community support systems, and shared responsibility in ensuring no one is left behind in cancer care.



One of the highlights of the day was the DBMF Project Challenge, which showcased innovative ideas and initiatives aimed at improving cancer awareness and community health outcomes. This segment reinforced the Foundation’s commitment to empowering communities through practical, sustainable solutions. The event concluded with a Cancer Pledge Ceremony, the award of prizes and certificates, and ongoing engagement activities facilitated by the DBMF team, and Biaka Hospital. The ceremony reaffirmed the collective commitment of all stakeholders to cancer awareness, prevention, and compassionate care.



Through education, training, advocacy, and community participation, the Dr. Biaka Memorial Foundation once again demonstrated its dedication to igniting hope and empowering communities in the global fight against cancer.
