A cross-section of students from four of the five schools of the Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB) on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, participated in the “Campus Conversation: The Internationalisation of STEM Education in France,” a seminar hosted at the ASTI Conference Hall of the University of Buea. The event provided an invaluable platform for students to discover global academic opportunities and gain first-hand insights into pursuing higher education and research in France.
Organized by the Campus France Buea Antenna in collaboration with Campus France Yaoundé and in partnership with the University of Buea, It brought together students, academic staff, education stakeholders, and international education experts with the shared objective of promoting academic mobility and strengthening educational ties between Cameroon and France. Designed specifically to expose students to international opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), the event highlighted the numerous academic pathways available to aspiring scholars seeking world-class education, cutting-edge research facilities, and international career prospects.
During the presentations, participants were introduced to France as one of the world’s leading destinations for higher education and scientific research. Speakers emphasized the country’s globally recognized Degree, Master’s and PhD (DMP) programmes, many of which are delivered entirely in English, making them accessible to international students from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Students also learned that nearly 40 percent of learners enrolled in France’s top-ranked universities are international students, a reflection of the country’s inclusive academic environment and its commitment to attracting talent from across the globe. This multicultural learning atmosphere, participants were told, not only enriches the educational experience but also prepares graduates for careers in an increasingly interconnected world.
Beyond academic programmes, the seminar provided comprehensive information on scholarships, student exchange initiatives, research grants, and affordable study opportunities available through French institutions and government-supported schemes. Students received practical guidance on tuition fees, accommodation, healthcare, visa procedures, climate, cultural adaptation, and the step-by-step application process through the Campus France network. These sessions were particularly beneficial in demystifying the process of studying abroad and addressing common concerns expressed by prospective applicants.
One of the most engaging moments of the seminar was an interactive talk show featuring four distinguished Campus France Alumni who shared their personal academic journeys in France. The alumni recounted how scholarships enabled them to pursue Master’s and Doctoral degrees while contributing to groundbreaking research in Engineering, Health Sciences, Artificial Intelligence, and other specialized fields. Their inspiring testimonies offered practical advice on adapting to a new academic environment, overcoming challenges associated with studying abroad, and making the most of international research opportunities. They encouraged students to remain academically focused, develop strong research interests, and take advantage of available scholarship opportunities to achieve their educational aspirations.
The discussions also underscored the longstanding academic cooperation between Cameroon and France, highlighting the numerous partnerships that continue to facilitate student exchanges, collaborative research, and professional development across various disciplines. For the participating BUIB students, the seminar proved to be an eye-opening experience that broadened their understanding of global education and inspired them to think beyond national borders. It encouraged them to embrace international learning opportunities, strengthen their academic profiles, and aspire to become globally competitive professionals capable of contributing meaningfully to scientific innovation and sustainable development.
