The event which was organized by the U.S. Embassy in Cameroon in collaboration with the National Museum of Cameroon, held on August 28, 2026, at the National Museum in Yaoundé, formed part of activities commemorating 250 years of American independence while highlighting the longstanding partnership and people-to-people connections between the United States and Cameroon.
The official opening ceremony brought together distinguished guests, including Deputy Assistant Secretary Sarah Troutman, visiting from Washington, D.C.; Chargé d’Affaires a.i. John G. Robinson; and the Minister of Arts and Culture, Professor Pierre Ismaël Bidoung Mkpatt as well as students and staff of the Biaka University Institute. The dignitaries participated in the opening ceremony and ribbon-cutting, officially marking the start of the fair.
The Freedom250 Fair offered visitors an engaging opportunity to explore American history, culture and civic life through a range of educational and interactive activities. These included guided tours of the National Museum, interactive history stations, the Constitution Challenge, an American History Reading Lounge and information on U.S. exchange programmes.
Staff and students from Biaka University Institute actively participated in the various activities, engaging with exhibits and gaining insights into aspects of American history and culture. Their participation provided an opportunity to learn outside the traditional classroom setting while connecting with other members of the diplomatic, cultural and educational community.
A major highlight of the celebration was the Founders Museum exhibition, which explores important aspects of American history and the nation’s founding story. The exhibition will remain open to the public at the National Museum of Cameroon through October 9, 2026.
The participation of Biaka University Institute reflects the institution’s commitment to creating opportunities that complement academic learning with practical exposure, cultural awareness and international engagement.
