The School of Health Sciences of the Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB) on Saturday, May 16, 2026, joined the global nursing community in commemorating the 2026 International Nurses Week under the theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives.” The event brought together university administrators, faculty members, healthcare professionals, nursing students, alumni, and invited guests in a vibrant celebration dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions of nurses to healthcare delivery and community well-being.
Observed annually around the world, International Nurses Week serves as an opportunity to appreciate the dedication, resilience, and compassion of nurses while promoting excellence in the profession. This year’s theme underscored the critical importance of empowering nurses through quality education, continuous professional development, and supportive working environments to ensure better health outcomes for individuals and communities.
Representing the Vice Chancellor of BUIB, the Director of Administration and Finance, Mr. Lawrence Francis Biaka, congratulated all nurses and student nurses for choosing a profession centered on service to humanity. In his address, he acknowledged the sacrifices, commitment, and unwavering dedication demonstrated by nurses in caring for patients, often under challenging circumstances.
He encouraged the student nurses to remain focused on their academic journey and to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and ethical practice throughout their careers. Stressing the importance of character alongside competence, he urged them to place God at the center of their lives and professional responsibilities, noting that compassion, humility, and honesty remain essential qualities of every successful healthcare practitioner.
Mme. Sally Ekoli on the other hand, challenged the future nurses to embrace innovation and technological advancements in healthcare while remaining vigilant against quackery, misinformation, and unethical practices that continue to threaten the credibility of the profession. She reminded them that continuous learning and adherence to evidence-based practice are indispensable in an ever-evolving healthcare landscape.
The celebration featured a series of engaging activities designed to educate, inspire, and entertain participants. The day commenced with a colorful parade that began at Checkpoint Molyko and proceeded through the streets to the BUIB campus. Dressed in their professional uniforms and carrying banners with messages promoting quality healthcare and nursing excellence, participants drew admiration from members of the public while raising awareness about the indispensable role of nurses in society.
Upon arrival on campus, participants took part in an exciting lineup of activities, including motivational talks delivered by experienced healthcare professionals who shared insights into leadership, professionalism, resilience, and career development in nursing. The programme also featured cultural performances, comedy, music, dance, and other entertainment that showcased the talents and diversity of the BUIB community while fostering camaraderie among students and practicing nurses. The event provided an excellent platform for interaction between aspiring nurses and experienced practitioners, allowing students to gain valuable inspiration, mentorship, and practical advice as they prepare to join the healthcare workforce.
